A bright log cabin on the shores of Lake Näsijärvi – the Kuisma family’s dream home in Murole
Designed by architect Memmu Pitkänen, this villa with a hipped roof blends seamlessly into the lakeside landscape of Ruovesi. Take a peek inside the Kuisma family’s bright and airy vacation home, which combines modern log construction, art, and an idyllic canal view.
The shores of Lake Näsijärvi are among the most sought-after cottage locations in Pirkanmaa, and the village of Murole in Ruovesi is the jewel in their crown. Merja and Mika Kuisma found a stunning lakeside lot there, spanning over 6,000 square meters, which tapers into the lake to form its own peninsula.
The site had previously been occupied by a log house that had been moved there in 1906 and was no longer habitable. Construction of the new villa began with the demolition of the old one, to make room on the headland for a modern and functional vacation home.
Architecture First: Light and Clean Lines
The villa was designed by Tampere-based architect Memmu Pitkänen. The result is a sleek, hipped-roof building whose large windows bring natural light and the lake view into the interior.
“Transporting the house kit from Ollikainen was exceptionally easy, since the factory is located just a couple of dozen kilometers away here in Ruovesi,” the family says.
The dark exterior color scheme of the villa and lakeside sauna was chosen to blend in with the surrounding natural environment. Viewed from the lake, the buildings blend elegantly into the landscape.
The interior design is a blend of light tones and contrast
The interior of the villa has a fresh, light color scheme, but bold choices have been used to create contrast. Dark gray Puustelli cabinets were chosen for the kitchen, and a black circulating-air fireplace sets the mood in the living room. Interior designer Jenni Hantula assisted with the interior design choices.
Special attention has been paid to the quality of the log construction: clean mitered corners and precise machining make the cottage a showcase of modern log construction.
An active cottage life and art
For the Kuisma family—which includes two adult daughters and their dog Luna—spending time at their cottage is all about active relaxation. Lake Näsijärvi provides the perfect setting for canoeing, boating, and stand-up paddleboarding.
Art provides a counterbalance to the fast pace of life: the women’s hobbies include painting, and soon the works created in the peaceful atmosphere of Murole will adorn the walls of the new villa.
Although the lot is spacious, the location is logistically perfect. It’s a reasonable drive from our home in Pirkkala to the cottage, and it’s easy to stop by Tampere’s amenities along the way.
